Where? : The trail is
located at the town of Dunsmuir, north of Redding on highway I5, exit 732. This
is 6.6 miles south from Shasta, 7.7 miles north of Castle Crags State Park.
Due note 1: The proximity
to I-5 and the fact this is 20 minutes hike to the waterfall makes Hedge Creek
Falls a very popular stopping point. Indeed, this is a good place to stop and stretch
your leg from the long drive.
Due note 2: there is a small
picnic area at the trailhead.
My thoughts: This is not a
must visit location but if you have 30-60 minute to spare or you are looking
for a short stop from your drive this can be the perfect location. Easy hike down
the trail will take you to the waterfall, keep hiking down and you will reach
the Sacramento River banks.
Hedge Creek
Falls is a waterfall on Hedge Creek, in the town of Dunsmuir, north of Redding
on highway I5, exit 732.
From the
parking lot located on the road, cross the street and head down the trail.
5-minute walk
and few switchbacks and you will reach to the 30-foot-tall waterfall.
There is a
small cove behind the waterfall, and the tail will take behind the falling
water.
Shortly after the waterfall, the trail flows into the Sacramento River. Just
before the last descend into the river gorge there is a viewing platform over
the river. From here there is a fantastic view of Mount Shasta.
Overall, trail
length from the parking lot to the river below and up is 0.7 mile.
