Salvation Mountain:
Salvation
Mountain is a small hillside landscape art sculpture created by Leonard Knight
(1931–2014) in the area known as “Slab City”, California Desert area of
Imperial County, several miles from the Salton Sea.
Knight began
work on his Salvation Mountain project in 1988.
He started from
the small hillside and added bulks of straw to create a large-scale sculpture
of a mountain covered in religious items and signs.
With using a
lot of paint, he created the art that include features like large heart,
flowers, and Bible verses. They are using some of the empty paint cans as part
of the art.
Knight worked
on Salvation Mountain for over 20 years, he believed that Salvation Mountain
was a way to spread his message of love and hope.
In recent years
the mountain became a popular tourist destination, people are coming to see
this site in the “middle of nowhere”.
Knight died in
2014, but Salvation Mountain remains a popular destination and the restoration
