Page, Arizona - Glen Canyon Dam Overlook

Introduction:

What? :

Visiting this almost unknown viewpoint is very simple, short with excellent unique views of the Colorado River canyon, in Page Arizona.

This can be just 15-20 extension for your trip here, amazing reword for the short easy side trip.

The scenery from this viewpoint is unique and impressive, and likely have the place almost to yourself.

From the viewing platform you can see to the north the base of Glen Canyon Dam, the impressive arch road bridge, and the Colorado River flowing down the canyon.




If you look to the other side, you see the deep Colorado canyon cutting its way in the plateau and the river flowing down in the direction of Horseshoe area.


 


 

 

Where? :

To reach this location turn off US Highway 89 onto Scenic View Road. On the other sides of the hotels turn west onto an unmarked paved road. The road will slope down and will end at a small parking lot. From there you can access the very short trail leading to the viewpoint below.

When? :

This location is open year-round, and I think can be access 24/7.

Summer months are very hot, and winter is clod.

 

 



Due note 1:

Free, no coast involved.

 

Due note 2:

No restrooms or water source.

No overnight camping here.

There is a cell reception at this point.

 

Due note 3:

The overlook is not so known location so it have less people compare to other Colorado river viewing point near Page.

 

Due note 4:

Please do not go too close to the edge and stay in the platform area, falling from here will be the last thing you will do.

 

Due note 5:

Although very short the trail is not suitable for those with mobility issues.

 

Due note 6:

No river access from this point.

 

Due note 7:

Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.

 

Due note 8:

This is a very short walk but fully exposed to the sun.

 

Due note 9:

During morning hours, the sun will not hit the lower section of the canyon and you will have shadows, mid days provide even lightning and no shadows.

 

Due note 10:

You can’t walk over to the bridge or dam from here.

 




 

 

The visit:




From the parking lot there is a short 500 ft long trail taking you down to the edge of the cliff viewing platform.

The trail is not even or flat and it first section are steps carved out of the sandstone, there are rails for helping with stability.

After a very short walk you will reach the overlook.

 



On the right side you will have unique views of Glen Canyon Dam holding Lake Powell behind it. The dam is more than 700 ft high and 300 ft wide, blocking the canyon.



In front of the dam, you can see the Glen Canyon Bridge (highway 89) crossing the canyon.

 


To the left side of the viewing platform there is the views of the Colorado River cutting through Glen Canyon red rock plateau, about 1,000 ft below you.

 



If you are here during morning hours look all the way down below and you might see Kayak tours preparing for a day trip down the canyon.

 



After 5-10 minutes here, enjoying the amazing views you will walk up back to your car.
